More about my performance (English and Spanish)

rosa mesa was born in Canary Islands and moved to Toronto in 1996 where she studied at the OCAD graduating in 2002. Her work has been exhibited in Spain, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Cuba, Canada, Brasil, Serbia, Germany, France and Switzerland.
Although she started working mainly in the areas of painting and drawing her work has moved toward installations, performance and public interventions. Her pieces are a response to her surroundings that become dissected and reconstructed in a new narrative that exposes whatever that triggers her in amusement or disgust. She has an interest in drawing as a medium of communication that is less charged than painting and her practice is often based in an observant and humoristic approach to the work. She explores areas of semiotics and the art practice, identity, nomadism, migration, feminism and the hybrid and changing state of contemporary culture. She is a member of Daily Services and art platform based in Berlin. Since 2004 rosa works between Spain, Canada, Germany and Switzerland where she has been doing several art residencies. Today she lives in Berlin and Las Palmas.

INTRODUCTION

rosa mesa 's performance has its origin in her years of school in Toronto where she was enrolled in the drawing and painting program but she was very early extending her practice to installation and performance. That was the reason why in 2004 in her first international exhibition t”The Youth Biennial of Young Artist”she included a big performatic element.
Her work use the body as an element of expresion supported often by the ritual, the tradition or the parody. It will be accerted to say that in this use of the body she plays a lot with the voice (she speaks four languages all with a strong accent) this fact makes that whatever time she speaks she sounds foreign, wherever she is. From one point of view she refers to the familiar origin of her taste for performance. As a Canary Islands born Carnaval was a ritual that the family embraced. (She recalls her grandmother telling her how the more exciting thing for her about the Carnaval was the chance to express emotions or political views disguised under some kind of custom).
The themes that she works with are the multiculturality from the point of view of someone that is eternally an inmigrant, the hibridity of contemporary culture and feminism. Her works takes inspration in artist as Mendieta, Abramovic, Adrian Piper, Coco Fusco...and at some level in the esperpentic nature of Paul Mac Carthy ´s works.
From the point of view of a culture and a planet threathened by unlimited consumerism, performance seems the best and more responsible way of expresion, looking for austerity in bad times. She is also interested in the participation of the audience in her work, through interactivity or allowing space for it to fill into her narratives.

Series: I hate white:...toll for you, 2010 presented at AccionMAD, Círculo de bellas artes de Madrid.

The piece is an oda to the ecosystem form by humanity, where each men is part of a sensitive and fragile structure. The tittle comes form the poet John Donne, whose text was also used in the film For whom the bells toll, based on the novel from Heminway about spanish civil war.
Taking this sentence as a metaphor I explore concepts as nationalism, patritism, humanity and personal responsability and involment in todays political panorama.
The piece is an interactive work in which the audience is interlaced with a delicate red ribbon so all of them must then work with the artist to allow movement and the completation of the piece.

“Reality Performance”, 2010

The piece is a investigation of different ways in which we can approach the audience and in this case I have chosen the internet, opening an space to allow the participation of the internet users. I open a virtual space in my bedroom in one side toward the festival Perfoartnet where the piece was presented and in other hand toward the internet users, inviting them to particpate in the performance.
The objectives were to create a virtual space to interact with the audiene via internet, to question the type of involmnet that we want to have through an internet conection as well as to exploro how chatting works in the net.

“Hermanos!”, 2010

“Brothers”, 2010
Presented at the festival Cuerpo a Cuerpo, Spain

This piece is part of the series “I hate white”, where the artist explores ideas about demagoguery and violence. The concept of white has simbolized purity, virginity, cleanness versus black charge with negative connotations and red associated with the violence or the impure.
In the piece Brothers, the artist plays in one hand with the colour and in the other with the concept of brotherhood, associated with nationalism. In any case the piece plays around preconceived ideas and attitudes.

Presented at Epipiderm, Encontros a volta de performance, Lisboa.
Secrets and puppets, 2010
Curated by Nuno Oliveira

The piece “Secrets and puppets” is an interactive piece in which the audience is invited to participate in the creative process telling their secrets or desires to the artist. The artist becomes a puppet that will respond to the audience interaction.

Development

In this performance the artist stands in front of a white wall with crayons on her hand and headphones on. The room is dark and the artist carries small lights in her clothes that allow the audience to see her movements . Her headphones are connected to an amplifier that collects the sounds from the audience through microphones(perhaps three, in discreets places in the room, it will depend on the disponibility of the room). At any given time any person from the audience can talk to these microphones. The audience will be notified of the desire of the artist to be contacted through these microphones upon arrival to the space. They can chat to the artist , tell her a secret, tell her to draw or to write something. As this communication is established the audience become simultaneously part of the visual coreography of the lights in the wall as well as indirect collaborators to the final drawing.
The piece talks about communication, responsabilities e interpretation. It is also a satire about the idea of secrets and control. The work explores our perception of the things that are not seen, of the things that are wishpered of the artist as the observer of what is not necessarly clear. The audience interact with the artist as she produces the piece(they can for example tell her a story, talk to her, tell her what to draw or write), the artist become an extension of the desires of the public but obviously given her own input as it is her hand the one that will produce the piece.

Once the piece is done , the artist dissapears and the light is turn on. Then the audience can find the traces of their intervention in the drawing left on the wall, each person knowing where they did enter the piece.

Investors Corner, 2008
PROGR, Zentrum für Kulture produktion, Bern Switzerland

Presented in an exhibition opening celebrated in Christmas time. The artist shows a piece in which she sells artist´s hairs obtained from donations from mainly emerging artist from Bern; where she was doing an art residency.
The idea of the art sale that surrounds Christmas time as well as the tension of a potential sale in openings are treated in the piece. The hairs are presented in neat boxes, each one with a number that refers to the artist whose hairs are in the box. This allows the potential buyer to obtain the contact and the info about the artist. The possibility of obtaining something very personal from an artist as well as the connotations affiliated to human hair are all present in the piece. Ultimately the performance try to remind us of the conection between the fetiche, the religion, the actual consumerist trends and the art world.

“Vanishing ink”, 2008
“Tinta invisible”, 2008

The piece Vanishing Ink talks about the loss of the past that inevitably occurs during the process of inmigration. During the piece the artist writes a letter to her grandmother Maria, as she was her grandfather,(she writes the letter she thinks he would have written if he would have written one) who abandon the Canary Islands in 1947 in a small boat toward the Caribbean and never wrote to his family again.
The text of this letter is inspired by the testimonials of the senegalese inmigrants that today arrive by thousands to the islands also in small boats called pateras.
The letter is written in invisble ink that it reveals itself through a process of heating' simbolizing the effort needed to get to know inmigrants past. The audience can when the piece ends obtain a letter that they can read exposing it to a heat source.

The letter reads
Dear Maria:
Sorry I have not written you before, but the trip was so horrible..many of us died in the boat and we threw them out for fear of infections, it took us three months, much longer that we have thought so we run out of food and water very early. On arrival we were very sick and others died in the hospital. When I was well enough to leave I had spent all our savings. Now I have a job, that barely covers my needs. I will not be able to send you and the children money, although I know how much you must need it. That is why I could never send you this letter.
Julian

“The Hand that rocks the Craddle rules the World”, 2007

This is a performance about identity, stereotypes and lenguage. While I was doing an art residency in Switzerland with my son barely twelve months old, often people thought I was his babysitter, mainly because he is a blond boy. It was through this experience how I got the idea to work a piece that yuxtapouses the idea of the latin woman as a care-giver to the idea of the latin woman as a sex symbol in a piece in which I read a lalabay in German dress up and with make up. The piece broadcast also in the internet brought obscene comments as well as confusion to the viewers.
